Will my toddler be expected to swim alone? What if my baby only watches? Parent & Tot is a guided introduction to the water for a young child and a participating adult. The aim is to build familiar routines and early habits together.

The instructor guides both of you

Your role is active. You follow the instructor's cues while helping your child take part. The instructor introduces supportive positions and ways to cue an activity before beginning it. If a hold or direction is unclear, ask for help before trying it.

This is a children's lesson with adult participation. You do not need to arrive with a plan to teach your baby a stroke. Focus on the activity being shown and your child's response.

Play has a purpose

The current program uses songs, guided play and repetition. Activities can include supported floating and movement, reaching, kicking, bubbles, and wall or exit routines. The exact experience depends on the child's readiness and the instructor's guidance.

A song or repeated cue can help make the next step familiar. Repeating an activity does not mean the lesson has stopped moving forward. For a young child, taking part more comfortably can be a useful change.

Watching can be part of the start

New sounds, water sensations and people may take time to get used to. A child can observe, reconnect with their adult and rejoin an activity. If your child becomes upset, tell the instructor and follow their guidance about the next step.

Submersion is not forced. Do not compare your child's willingness to put their face in with another child's turn, or make going underwater the test of whether the lesson was worthwhile.

Look for a small, specific change

After class, think about one thing you noticed. Did your child join a familiar song, reach toward the wall with support or seem more comfortable in a supported position? These are observations to discuss, not a checklist every child must finish in one visit.

Parent & Tot does not make a baby or toddler safe alone around water. Close adult supervision remains essential, including when a child seems confident.
