Swim Lessons Near Old Westbury: Finding Your Child's Level
Updated: Oct 12

For Old Westbury families choosing swim lessons, a level name can be harder to interpret than the timetable. A child may enjoy a pool, have completed another program, or use a flotation aid and still need help with the skills required by a particular class. Start with what the swimmer can do now.
Describe the support the swimmer uses
Useful observations include whether a child needs hands-on help to float, relies on equipment to travel through the water, or needs repeated prompting to complete a familiar task. These are descriptions, not judgments. They give an instructor more information than 'beginner' or 'advanced.' Do not ask a child to demonstrate an unfamiliar skill just to fill out a booking form.
Use the Level Finder's 'not sure' option
Swim Lessons LI's Level Finder asks about age and independent skills. Independent means the swimmer can repeat the skill without flotation equipment, hands-on help or constant prompting. If you cannot confidently answer, select 'not sure.' The instructor will confirm the starting placement in the water.
A previous class label may not transfer
Different schools can use the same level number for different skills. If your child has taken lessons elsewhere, share the last skills they practiced and any areas that still need support. An old certificate can provide context, but today's ability and comfort are more useful for choosing the next step.
Choose a workable format and location
Our small groups are limited to three swimmers per instructor. Private lessons offer one-to-one instruction when an individual pace is useful. All of these lessons meet at the heated indoor pool at Pierce Country Day Camp, 37 Mineola Avenue, Roslyn, NY 11576.
